Cookies on the exchange deck

What we set, when, and how to clear the board.

What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file placed on your device by a website. Cookies allow sites to recognise your browser on return visits, store preferences, and collect anonymised usage data. Under the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) and UK GDPR, cookies that are not strictly necessary require your informed consent before being set.

CrownReel uses two technologies for local storage: standard HTTP cookies (set via server response headers) and browser localStorage entries (set via JavaScript). Both are described below.

Strictly necessary storage

The following entries are required for the site to function and are set without consent:

  • crownreel_age_ok (localStorage) — stores the value 1 when you confirm you are 18 or over. This prevents the age-verification screen from re-appearing on subsequent visits. It is stored in your browser only; nothing is transmitted to our servers. It persists until you clear your browser storage.
  • crownreel_consent (localStorage) — stores a JSON record of your cookie preference choices (analytics on/off, personalisation on/off) and the timestamp of your selection. Used to honour your preferences across page loads without re-prompting. Expires after 12 months.

These entries cannot be disabled via the cookie settings panel because disabling them would break core site functionality (age verification and consent management).

Analytics cookies

Analytics cookies are only set after you click “Accept all” or enable the Analytics toggle in the cookie settings panel. They are not set by default.

When active, the analytics platform records: pages visited, time on page, scroll depth, browser type, device category, and the referring page URL. No name, email address, or directly identifying information is recorded. Data is aggregated and used solely to improve the editorial quality and navigation of CrownReel.

The analytics platform operates under a data processing agreement and Standard Contractual Clauses where data flows outside the UK. You can withdraw consent at any time via the button.

Affiliate tracking cookies

When you click a sponsored operator link on CrownReel, you are redirected to the operator’s website. The operator’s own cookies and tracking technologies will apply at that point, governed by their own privacy and cookie policies. CrownReel does not set affiliate tracking cookies itself; the affiliate relationship is handled server-side via tracking parameters in the outbound URL, not via cookies placed on your device by this site.

We recommend reading each operator’s cookie policy before registering. Affiliate tracking cookies are set on consent only, per each operator’s own consent flow.

How to manage or clear cookies

You have three options for managing cookies and local storage on CrownReel:

  1. Cookie settings panel — click the button in the footer at any time to review or change your analytics and personalisation preferences. Changes take effect immediately.
  2. Browser settings — all major browsers allow you to view, delete, and block cookies via their settings menu. Note that blocking all cookies may prevent crownreel_age_ok and crownreel_consent from being stored, which means the age gate and consent prompt will appear on every visit.
  3. Browser extensions — privacy-focused extensions such as uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger can block specific third-party cookies. These operate independently of our consent panel.
